Riven--A Compelling Story

I just finished Riven by Jerry Jenkins, and I must say it is a powerful read. Most definitely it captures your attention within the first 100 words. And you want to continue to read to find out the rest of the story. There are some unexpected twists and turns along the way, and to be perfectly honest, some spots that were uncomfortable to read. But real life is like that, isn't it? Although this is fiction, the characters make some life choices that parallel real life--heartbreaking, messy, hurtful. At those spots in the book, I seriously considered walking away. Ah, but the pull of a good read is just that--one must keep reading to find out how this all weaves together.

Plus, Serious Man devoured this book in 2 days. Anything that captures his attention like that must be an interesting read. I have to admit, as I was reading Riven after him, I had my doubts about letting him read it first before I did. Again, there are some messy real life issues portrayed in the book. However, nothing in a too graphic or inappropriate way.

As I pressed on, I thought I knew where the book was going. I was wrong. I didn't see any of it coming. Don't give up on this book--the last third of the story is compelling.
